8:58am - Everyone entering the courtroom at once, including Haslett, who is the first witness of the day. 48 Hours guys setting up cameras. Three observers other than me. James talking to Jeff about what video he plans to play today.

9:03am - SB and AR brought in. AR chatting to Marc. James getting his materials prepared at the podium. The three guards standing around chatting quietly. Everyone is really quiet today.

9:14am - Judge enters.

9:15am - Jury enters. James continues his redirect of Haslett. Asking about the extradition hearings. Asking if he gave accurate information to the extradition court. Haslett answers yes.

From a transcript, June 28th, not sure if it is a phone call or face to face. SB asking Haslett if the Bellevue mobsters are intelligent or not. Asking if they would notice subtle police things in the police reports in Bellevue.

48 Hours chick comes in. She's conferring with cameraman. Very distracting and noisy. I ask them to be quiet.

James has, up on the big screen, several quotes. Song objects to taking these quotes out of context. James says he highlighted the quotes that made the undercover team realize SB needed to see the BPD report for himself. Says to appease the defense he will read the whole thing. He then shows a quote from SB saying the info he wanted from the report was if there were any hairs on the bodies. If there was any blood in the car or on their clothes.

9:40am - Roger queuing up audio for transcript. Now playing it.

9:48am - Tape is over. Conversation was audiotape between SB and Haslett about a report from the BPD that Haslett supposedly saw and then burned. SB asks him why the box with his fingerprint on it and his hairs in the shower would be in the same report. Haslett said it was a full forensic report on SB. SB asks if there is a forensic report on AR. Haslett says no. SB asks why. Is it because there is no forensics on AR. Haslett says I don't know. SB says he wants to know what the BPD "have on us".

9:58am - Now talking about phone intercepts. Plays phone call that Song played May 4th about the news article in The Province. James asking Haslett if he ever read the newspaper articles that were written about the Bellevue murders. Haslett answers no.

  • Now playing a phone call between Shinkaruk and SB. SB screens the call but picks it up when Shinkaruk identifies himself. Shinkaruk asks him if he is available for an overnight job on Tuesday. Phone call ends.
  • Another phone call between Shinkaruk and SB. Just Shinkaruk telling SB to pick up the phone, but he doesn't. SB's answering machine message is him saying, "987-1974" in a bored tone.
  • Another call a minute later is Shinkaruk leaving his pager number.
  • Now a call from SB to Shinkaruk's pager.
  • Now Shinkaruk calling SB back confirming the July 18th job.

10:15am - Moving on to the fake police memo Haslett showed Burns. the memo states that as soon as DNA is complete that Burns and Rafay will be arrested.

10:20am - Morning break called.

10:48am - Back from break. Noel comes in. Lights out. James playing video of 7/18/95. Video starts out with SB talking to "mobsters" about computers. Shinkaruk eventually leaves and Haslett and SB have a "heart to heart" that starts out with Haslett saying, "They're coming to get your ass."

11:07am - Haslett gives SB a copy of the previously mentioned fake BPD memo.

SB's reaction: One of the items said SB had red fabric in his hair - he's saying I don't rub my hair with a towel after a shower, I just comb it. Now onto stains on boxer shorts found in washer - SB "I don't know anything about boxers. I didn't do any laundry there." Now on to blood stains in the garage - "I don't know how there could be any bloodstains in the garage."

As SB says all the evidence doesn't mean anything. Haslett starts talking about destroying the evidence.

11:33am - Talking about how SB disposed of clothing in different dumpsters throughout Bellevue. Now Haslett asking who can be trusted. SB says AR is trustworthy. Haslett asking why AR wasn't swinging a bat with SB. SB says because AR is a little guy. Haslett asking how did you plan it? We didn't. Youjus tup and one day said let's off your parents for the insurance money? Yeah, basically.

11:50am - SB telling him the alibi. Says he had a gonch on.

12:13pm - Break - back at 1:30pm

1:30pm - Pretty full house. All attorneys present. Several students.

1:35pm - Defendants brought in.

1:39pm - Judge enters.

1:42pm - Jury enters. James starts playing video again. Haslett talking about horse racing. Now SB asking Haslett if he wants to be an extra in a film. Now SB talking about how he's worried some miniscule drop of blood might have gotten on AR. Haslett asks how would that happen? SB says I don't know, like the JFK bullet that went all over the place. SB saying another fact is that he wore gloves during the murders. SB talking about writing a book to coincide with the release of their fiction novel. SB talking about how his phone doesn't accept calls from press people. 48 Hours buy laughing.

2:07pm - Now talking again whether Atif & Jimmy are "solid guys".

2:12pm - As SB talks on the big screen about how smart he is, SB & AR are chatting quietly and I believe writing notes to each other. They are looking down and seem to be communicating in some way. Usually they don't do this for this long.

2:30pm - video over. Judge turns on lights. James questioning Haslett, who has spend all this time watching the video from the stand. Asking about scenarios and how they were planned.

2:42pm - SB & AR phone call being played. SB asks Atif to come to Victoria to pick him up. Gives him the address and room #, etc.

2:50pm - Afternoon break.
